Understanding Web Accessibility

What is web accessibility?

The web in the digital age is very important. It has become the number one resource to billions of people and counting. It contains endless information on education, employment, government, commerce, health care, recreation, and more. It’s also a channel for communication and entertainment. Available information and privileges should be accessible by all people regardless of any disabilities. The web’s goal is to eradicate any barriers that would hinder others from accessing its content.

What is Web Accessibility?

In one sentence, web accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the web. If you are running a business website, having this in hindsight is very important. You have, or are building, a website as a means to reach out to people, which should include people with disabilities onto the list to whom you are reaching out. Ensure that your website, mobile app, or any digital application can be accessed by everyone: those with a permanent disability, temporary injury, or are in a difficult situation.

How to Make the Web Accessible?

There are numerous ways you can develop your website or application to give access to everyone. One good example is adding captions to videos. It will not only benefit those with hearing disabilities, but also those who are in a situation where they can’t turn up the volume of their phones, or those who have forgotten their earphones. Another would be the Text-to-Speech feature. Many computers and mobile devices today have built-in text-to-speech software because people with disabilities are also consumers. This would benefit people who cannot read the written language (people who are blind, have partial sight, with cognitive and learning disabilities) and for those people who prefer to listen.

As we move forward in life, the use of technology rises. This progress should be accessible to everyone. No one should get left behind. It is best to incorporate accessibility from the start. Now, take a step back and evaluate the website you have or are developing. If it’s not accessible by everyone, then it’s time to re-work it and make it more accessible.
